What exactly does it mean when someone says their vehicle is a stage 1 or 2?

i recently just bought a 2011 plasma blue WRX STI and i was was wondering what it means when people talk about the stage of their vehicle? also sorry if this is a dumb question i have just recently gotten interested in cars.
