I'm driving from Buffalo to Washington DC and wondering if there are any must see sites along the way? Thanks.?

Looking for the best way to drive from Buffalo to Washington where we might get to do some sightseeing along the way...places to stop, places to avoid, fastest route etc. We are a group of firefighters if that helps...no flower shows or knitting shops if possible...Thanks
